A word to know

Prescription: an order after an assessment.

A useful question is who makes the decision, and what they need to know first.

What the word means

A professional with a license to prescribe gives a medicine order called a prescription.

For a prescription medicine, the September 2026 requirement under U.S. federal law is a valid prescription from a health professional licensed to prescribe that medicine.

“Prescriber” means the professional who gives that order. Ask for their name and professional role before starting.

There is room for your questions

The May 2026 guidance requires a way for a patient to direct further questions to the treating professional; the Federation of State Medical Boards issued it.

Ask what choices the prescriber is considering and why. You can also ask what an assessment without a medicine recommendation would look like.

If you feel lost, say which word or part of the plan needs another explanation.

Make the next step clear

Before ending the conversation, ask how you will receive the plan, which pharmacy would fill any prescription, and whom to contact afterward.

Request the plan in writing so you can return to it when you are less rushed.

A question to keep

Who decides whether to prescribe, and how can I discuss other options?
